SUMMARY

A revelatory and personal film, Beyond the Frame discusses colonial photography and challenges the gaze through which it framed Africa. A journey that emerges from a family archive discovered by chance, Beyond the Frame observes, interprets, and reflects upon how the colonial legacy shapes our present.

Director Biography

Simone Brioni co-wrote and co-directed two films on the Italian colonial legacy and memory and the work by Italian postcolonial writers: The Fourth Road (2012) and Aulò (2012). He also wrote the biographic documentary Maka (2022) about Italian Cameroonian writer Geneviève Makaping, directed by Elia Moutamid. He is Associate Professor in the Department of English at Stony Brook University and his research specializes in the literary and cinematographic representation and self-representation of migrants. Matteo Sandrini is a filmmaker and a photographer, whose work focuses on human behavior in situations of climatic adversity, religious rituals, urban conflicts and visual memory retrieval. His most recent work includes the documentary The Man with Keys. A Meditation on the Old Age (2021), which he directed.
