SUMMARY

Seville, 1618. Diego Velázquez paints Christ in the House of Martha and Mary. In the foreground of the painting, a small red pepper catches the eye. From Seville to Mexico City, from Madrid to the valleys of Oaxaca, this documentary traces the adventures, conquests, tragic experiences and artistic inventions that allowed this pepper to appear in the painting of the great 17th century Spanish painter.

Director Biography

Nicolas Autheman is a French author, director and producer born in 1982 in Paris. Author of a dozen documentaries and audiovisual installations as part of museum exhibitions, he founded the production company Minimum Moderne in 2018, with which he develops his own projects of documentary creations and fictions. After studying political science and working as Research Assistant for Barbet Schroeder during his film The Lawyer of Terror in 2008, he wrote and directed his first documentary in 2011, dedicated to pilgrims lost in religious gatherings in India: Egarés du Gange. He then worked for two years for the collection of Arte L'Europe des écrivains which interrogates the fiction of national identities through the words of contemporary writers such as Erri de Luca or Petros Markaris. In 2016, he directed Le Douanier Rousseau, The modern bloom, portrait of the naive painter in connection with the exhibition dedicated to him by the Musée d'Orsay. In 2018, he wrote and co-directed Refugees, a market under influence, a global-scale investigation on the privatization of refugee camps around the world. At the same time, he directed Vicente, a creative short film devoted to the political image in the slum of Calais. In 2020, his documentary adaptation of Timothy Brook’s best-seller, Vermeer’s Hat, traced the birth of globalization from the making of a beaver felt hat in a Vermeer canvas. In 2021, he directed The Znamya Project, a medium-length creative film that traced the Russian lighting experience of Siberia with the help of giant mirrors sent into space. In 2022, he directed Le Piment de Vélasquez, a dive into the discovery of America through the history of art and food. In parallel, he also creates various audiovisual installations for temporary or permanent exhibitions for museums. In 2017, he created a multi-screen video device on the city presented at the opening of the new permanent gallery Méditerranée du Mucem, and a short creative film dedicated to gold in Venice in April 2018. He has also collaborated with the Musée d'Aquitaine in Bordeaux, the Musée d'Histoire in Marseille and the Grand Palais and the Louvre, notably by directing all the films in the exhibition Joconde immersive.
