The Makavejev Case or Trial in a Movie Theater is a story about the public forum following the screening of Dušan Makavejev’s film WR: The Mysteries of the Organism, the discussion that will lead to the isolation of the director, his creative exile from ex-Yugoslavia, and the blacklisting of one of the most radical and innovative films emerging from Eastern Europe throughout the second part of the twentieth century. It is a story about the era of late socialism when, in spite of some encouraging signs and increased civil liberties in Yugoslavia, it gradually became evident that the system would continue to curb creative expression of artists and filmmakers.
