ARTICLE 1 / GENERAL PROVISIONS

History Film Festival is an international festival of historical documentary films organized by ISTRA FILM.

The Festival is taking place in Rijeka from September 8th to 12th, 2020. 

History Film Festival aims at offering viewers and film experts an insight into contemporary film and TV production of historical documentary films, at the same time providing a place where film professionals can meet and share their creative ideas for future projects.

ARTICLE 2 / PROGRAM

Festival programme consists of a competition programme, and special thematic programmes (presentations of independent and TV productions, screenings of material from film archives, specialized conferences…). History Film Festival encourages filmmakers to apply films for its special programmes.

Special programmes in 2020:

History Film Festival in 2020 will focus especially on documentary films dealing with the following topics:

  • Politics – events, politicians and political ideas which left their mark in human history
  • Migrations – films that tell stories of people who had to leave their homes for any reason
  • Women – HFF in 2020 is especially focused on women documentary filmmakers and stories of well-known or less-known women
  • Fellini – documentaries about the legendary Italian director Federico Fellini and his influence on modern filmmaking

ARTICLE 3 / CONDITIONS FOR SUBMISSION 

The films for the competition programme can be submitted by directors, independent and TV producers, distributors and national film bodies entitled and authorized for representation and submission of films.

Documentary films of all running times, regardless of their year of production, whose main topic is history – historical events and characters, can be entered.

The films must be submitted online via FilmFreeway or FilmFestivalLife. The links for submision can be found on the Festival website.

When submitting online screeners please note that it is the submitter’s responsibility to make sure the materials are available for use by the History Film Festival team and that the password remains valid until the end of the Festival.

    • films over 60 min………………… 50 € entry fee (excl. VAT)
  • LATE DEADLINE
    • films up to 60 min……………..  50 € entry fee (excl. VAT)
    • films over 60 min…………………. 80 € entry fee (excl. VAT)

ENTRY DEADLINES for 2020:

  • OFFICIAL DEADLINE………… 10 February 2020
  • LATE DEADLINE………………. 10 March 2020

ARTICLE 4 / AUTHORIZATION

By submitting a film to the Festival the applicant confirms and warrants that he/she is entitled to submit the film to History Film Festival and has authorization and consent from the owners of copyright and related rights, any trademarked content and/or other subject matter of intellectual property on the content included within the submitted film.

Furthermore, by submitting a film to the Festival the applicant guarantees that all History Film Festival screening rights are cleared, declares to be the owner of the rights in the work submitted and that he/she is authorized to grant rights of usage and/or to transfer it to third parties.

History Film Festival, ISTRA FILM, its representatives, authorized persons and/or employees shall not be held responsible for any unauthorized inclusion of any content in the film that might be the basis for third parties’ claims.

The applicant shall protect and fully indemnify History Film Festival, ISTRA FILM, all of its representatives, authorized persons and/or employees against all claims, losses, damages, liabilities, and expenses arising out of or in connection with claims by third parties in relation to the submitted film.

HISTORY FILM FESTIVAL reserves the right to disqualify and exclude any film that is subject to third parties’ claims.

The applicant is committed not to withdraw the film from History Film Festival after announcement of the official program. In case the film is withdrawn, History Film Festival and ISTRA FILM reserve the right to claim damages.

Directors, producers and distributors of the awarded films shall be entitled to mentioning the award and History Film Festival in official and promotional materials as well as during the film’s distribution. History Film Festival’s file will be sent to producers in digital form after receiving their application.

History Film Festival reserves the right to write its own texts for the festival catalogue, programmes, flyers and other promotional materials.

ARTICLE 5 / SELECTION AND SCREENINGS

Festival Director/Head Programmer selects the films for the official competition programme and decides on the screening timetable. In his selection work, the Director/Head Programmer may be assisted by advisors of his choice.

Only films which are selected for the Festival’s competition programme shall receive an official acceptance letter. Notification of definitive selection will be sent to the applicant 30 days before the beginning of the Festival at the latest.

Each selected film will be shown not more than three times during History Film Festival. In case a film receives an award, it will be shown one more time together with other awarded films. 

The applicant authorizes ISTRA FILM to keep all submitted films in the archives of History Film Festival in order to be used for documentation, educational and cultural purposes, without granting rights for its circulation (distribution). For easier storage, films can also be stored in a digital data base.

ARTICLE 6 / AWARDS

Official awards of History Film Festival are:

  • Grand Prix
  • Best Independent Production Documentary
  • Best TV Production Documentary
  • Best Director
  • Best Screenplay
  • Best Cinematography
  • Best Film Editing
  • Best Composer 
  • Audience Award

Official awards consist of a statue.

ARTICLE 7 / JURY 

Festival director proposes the members of the jury and coordinates their work.

When evaluating films, the jury shall follow its own artistic criteria and shall abide by History Film Festival Rules.

The winner of the Audience Award is selected on the basis of the average rating given by the audience to each film after its screening.

ARTICLE 8 / PRESS MATERIALS AND SHIPMENTS

For public projections at History Film Festival, secure download of a high-quality projection copy will be requested, unless already provided through the submission platform. The projection format is 1920×1080 resolution, h.264 encoded, preferably above 10Mbit. All non-English films must have English subtitles. 

Physical copies can be accepted in special circumstances. Please note that History Film Festival cannot accept DCP format.

For films entering the official selection, the following materials in digital format will also be required:

  • a brief synopsis of the film in English;
  • at least 3 photographs from the film (of the quality suitable for press – 300 dpi);
  • the director’s filmography and biography in English and one photo;
  • promotional material (trailer, press packages, posters, etc.)
  • English transcript/dialogue list or external English subtitles

Applicants are responsible for the accuracy of the submitted data.

By filling in the submission form, the applicant authorizes History Film Festival and/or ISTRA FILM to use and publish all the above specified materials and information in the History Film Festival catalogue, programs, flyers, other promotional materials, on the Internet and in press for promotional purposes. 

History Film Festival is entitled to publish a trailer or use extracts from a film of up to 3 minutes of running time for promotional purposes.

The materials sent for the pre-selection will not be returned.

History Film Festival reserves the right to reject film copies of low technical quality.

In case additional and/or screening materials are not delivered by the deadline, History Film Festival reserves the right to exclude the film from the official program.

ARTICLE 9 / ACCOMMODATION AND ACCREDITATIONS

History Film Festival shall invite the director or a representative of a film selected  for the Festival’s programme and cover his/hers accommodation expenses in Rijeka.

If they apply in time (one month before the beginning of the Festival), History Film Festival will ensure all necessary accreditation and promotion of their film, subject to available funds.

ARTICLE 10 / FINAL PROVISIONS

By filling the submission form all applicants acknowledge and agree to these Rules.

In case of any dispute, the competent court in Rijeka shall have exclusive jurisdiction over all issues related to History Film Festival.

The Director of History Film Festival shall have the discretionary right to decide on and solve the cases not specified in these Rules.
